SINGAPORE — An online discussion on alternative careers has generated some buzz on social media, with a variety of quirky suggestions in response to the question: “What's a career option you're unlikely to pursue, but would totally try?”.

The question was posted on online forum Reddit in a r/askSingapore thread on Wednesday (May 29).

One user noted that some people have made drastic career changes, writing: “I would totally pick museum curator or restoration.” Such a job "looks therapeutic", the user added.

“That or be a crane operator/cargo container crane operator. Just wanna fulfil my childhood Bob the Builder dream,” the user said, referring to the popular children's television show.

The post with the question had received more than 300 responses by Thursday evening.

SHARING EXPERIENCES

One user recounted an encounter with a museum restorer.

“I have met a museum restorer before and the variety of his skill set is absolutely astounding.”

Others also talked about their unfulfilled dreams.

One said the dream was to be a baker but called it “unlikely” to happen due to the long hours and physical labour.

“Still fun to imagine and daydream though,” the user added.

One jokingly said: “Prime Minister. I have several interesting ideas.”

Unorthodox jobs were also mentioned in the comments.

A Redditor wrote that as an introvert, mushroom farming would be an ideal career.

And in true Singaporean style, someone wrote: “Security at concerts, get paid for being at a concert!”

NOT ENOUGH MONEY

Among the light-hearted comments was a note of common sense by someone who wrote that it is impractical to pursue dream careers because of money.

Another wanted to be an early childhood educator but added: “Money still matters at the end of the day. I need money to enjoy a comfortable life and provide for my family.”

Someone else suggested: “Full fledged traveller and itinerary planner. Would if I have the money.”

And then there was a Reddit user who wanted to be a zookeeper.

"Wanted to work with animals for the longest time but am in engineering because the pay is good."
