Nearly half of Singaporeans feel they are not financially prepared to handle a cancer diagnosis: Study

SINGAPORE — Nearly half of Singaporeans (43 per cent) who have never had cancer believed that they are not financially well-prepared to manage the disease if they are diagnosed with it, a study here has found.

  • Close to half of Singaporeans do not think they are prepared to manage the financial burden should they be diagnosed with cancer
  • Researchers said that "financial toxicity" is increasingly recognised to adversely affect patients' quality of life
  • This refers to the financial distress arising from cancer treatment costs
  • Concerns over the cost of cancer care are likely to also significantly affect one’s decisions about whether to delay or receive treatment
  • The study, sponsored by DBS bank, was designed by the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore and local think tank Research For Impact
